Pilot

Transumo project ‘Pilot’ researches the possibilities for a substantial transition in the use and control of large scale technical systems, by using prognostic integrated logistics combined with knowledge based expert systems and new technological developments for monitoring, tracking and tracing (such as RFID). In the project, innovative applications of existing technologies are considered (e.g. using tracking and tracing technology for motoring the technical status as well as the position). Furthermore the project has an innovative integrated approach, combining knowledge and experience from different fields of expertise and application. The participating universities of Delft, Erasmus, Twente and Tilburg each have their own focus, perspectives and expertise. The different companies involved provide for various fields of application, each with their specific characteristics. These combined makes this project interesting, new, complex and challenging.

The anticipated benefits of using prognostic integrated logistics versus traditional logistics are substantial improvements in e.g. logistics services, safety, reliability and flexibility. It is to be expected that prognostic integrated logistics will reduce the number of transport movement, maintenance costs and operational costs.

The project aims to

  • develop insight in the technology available and required for prognostic integrated logistics (e.g. RFID),
  • produce logistic concepts/models for the required control, and
  • analyze the economical aspects and business opportunities.

The preparations for this project project started in 2004 and the project was officially approved in October 2005. Most of the participants however already started work, unofficially and at their own risk, in the beginning of 2005. Due to the delayed approval there were some deviations to the initial project proposal, but most of the deliverables for 2005 were delivered as planned. The financial/administrative procedures required for the Yearly Report (2005) proved more challenging. Especially the required accountant’s statements are problematic. We are still working to finalize the year 2005. During the course of the project there have been changes in the project consortium. Some companies have withdrawn from the project, while others have joined. First steps have been made towards further integration of the project, and to further cooperation with other Transumo projects. In general, Transumo project ‘Pilot’ is considered to be on track.
